English Deficiency and the Native-Immigrant Wage Gap We focus on the effect of English deficiency on the native-immigrant wage gap for male employees in the UK using the first wave of the UK Household Longitudinal Survey. We show that the wage gap is robust to controls for age, region of residence, educational attainment and ethnicity. However, English as Additional Language (EAL) is capable of explaining virtually all the remaining wage gap between natives and immigrants. Using the interaction of language of country of birth and age-at-arrival as instrument, we find strong evidence of a causal effect of EAL on the native-immigrant wage gap. Molecular cloning and characterization of CIDE-3, a novel member of the cell-death-inducing DNA-fragmentation-factor (DFF45)-like effector family.
DNA fragmentation is one of the critical steps in apoptosis, which is induced by DNA fragmentation factor (DFF). DFF is composed of two subunits, a 40 kDa caspase-activated nuclease (DFF40) and a 45 kDa inhibitor (DFF45). Recently a novel family of cell-death-inducing DFF45-like effectors (CIDEs) has been identified. Among CIDEs, two from human (CIDE-A and CIDE-B) and three from mouse (CIDE-A, ...
متن کاملSolution Structure of the CIDE-N Domain of CIDE-B and a Model for CIDE-N/CIDE-N Interactions in the DNA Fragmentation Pathway of Apoptosis
Apoptotic DNA fragmentation and chromatin condensation are mediated by the caspase-activated DFF40/ CAD nuclease, which is chaperoned and inhibited by DFF45/ICAD. CIDE proteins share a homologous regulatory CIDE-N domain with DFF40/CAD and DFF45/ ICAD. Here we report the solution structure of CIDE-N of human CIDE-B. We show that the CIDE-N of CIDE-B interacts with CIDE-N domains of both DFF40 a...
متن کاملCpG methylation plays a vital role in determining tissue- and cell-specific expression of the human cell-death-inducing DFF45-like effector A gene through the regulation of Sp1/Sp3 binding
Cell-death-inducing DFF45-like effector A (CIDE-A) belongs to a family of proapoptotic proteins, the expression of which is highly restricted in human tissues and cells. Here, the core region of the human CIDE-A promoter was characterized. Surprisingly, two Sp1/Sp3-binding sites, rather than tissue-specific transcription factors, were found to be required for the promoter activity. Although the...
متن کاملCIDE, a novel family of cell death activators with homology to the 45 kDa subunit of the DNA fragmentation factor.
DFF45 is a subunit of the DNA fragmentation factor (DFF) that is cleaved by caspase-3 during apoptosis. However, the mechanism by which DFF45 regulates apoptotic cell death remains poorly understood. Here we report the identification and characterization of two mammalian genes, CIDE-A and CIDE-B, encoding highly related proteins with homology to the N-terminal region of DFF45. CIDE-A and CIDE-B...
متن کاملCIDE-A gene expression in patients with obesity qualified for endovascular treatment of abdominal aorta aneurysm.
UNLABELLED CIDE-A gene and the genes of LRP group play a key role in the regulation of the body weight and lipid metabolism in mammals. CIDE-A is defined as a potential human obesity gene and the LRP1 gene is associated with the development of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). The aim of the study was to define the role of CIDE-A gene in patients with dyslipidemia and asymptomatic AAA. MATERIA...
